Fair Use
bar

As a collage artist, photographer, and filmmaker; I have been concerned with what I incorporate in my artwork. . . VERY careful in what I use in combination with my own photography, painting, and collage work. Artists, writers and even librarians are concerned with what bullying mega corporations like Walt Disney are doing in changing copyright law and the world of public domain.

Here are a couple very interesting commentaries from a legal and artistic perspective >>

Article by Chris Sprigman, "THE MOUSE THAT ATE THE PUBLIC DOMAIN."

(There are people out there-- doing good work for so many artists like myself. Thank you Chris!)

This is an interesting commentary by an unusual and talented poet/artist from Portugal, Adriana de Barros. Watch her flash poem: Freedom of Expression

Also, Watch these wonderful video (YouTube) commentaries on Copyright and Fair Use >>
1) A Fair(y) Use Tale
(this one actually demonstrates fair use IN ACTION!)
2) The Disney Trap: How Copyright Steals our Stories
(an Italian view on copyright, eccellente).

AND, here are a couple resources to bookmark >>

Center for the Study of the Public Domain: Duke University shares some great info on fair use and public domain. Be sure to DOWNLOAD the PDF comic book, "Tales from the Public Domain: BOUND BY LAW?"and watch the video clips from the "FRAMED!! . . ." conference.

Center for Social Media: American University's website on Copyright & Fair Use. Be sure to DOWNLOAD the PDF of this very useful handbook, Documentary Filmmakers’ Statement of Best Practices in Fair Use.
